About Us

Hello! My name is Julie Wren and I, along with my husband Dr Timothy Wren, founded Rye School of English in 2012, with the dream of providing the very best in English language tuition and home stay. I am a fully qualified TESOL teacher (Diploma in TESOL from Canterbury Christ Church) with over 25 years of experience in EFL teaching, having taught English to children and adults of a wide variety of nationalities.

Our school was born, grown and remains at our family home - a beautiful eighteenth century farmhouse, nestled in the idyllic Kent countryside. Students eat, sleep and learn in our home alongside myself and my family, immersing themselves amongst native English speakers and authentic English culture.

Since our inception we have welcomed students from Europe and Asia, and as our school continues to grow and improve we look forward to welcoming many more. We have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know our students and helping them achieve their English language goals, and in the process have gained friends from around the world.

Please explore our website to find out more about us and what we offer. Alternatively, contact us to receive a personal response from myself.

Welcome to Rye School of English!

Julie Wren -  Julie Wren, Director

We are excellently located:

  • Our nearest village is Rolvenden that takes 15 minutes to walk. This has local shops and a pub.
  • Our nearest large town is Tenterden which is 15 minutes by car or bus. Tenterden has a population of over 7,000 people and it has a variety of supermarkets, coffee houses, restaurants, pubs, bookshops and many others. Great for shopping!
  • Hastings (on the coast) is 30 minutes by car or bus.
  • Battle an ancient town is 30 minutes by car or bus.
  • From Headcorn station (20 minutes by car) we can reach London in only one hour!
  • Or, you could visit the beautiful city of Canterbury, one hour by car. Canterbury is a busy city with two Universities and this ancient city is built on the Great Stour River. It is exciting to travel down this river in a punt (which is a boat rather like an English Gondola)!
  • Brighton is one hour and 30 minutes by car or train.
  • Eastbourne just an hour by car or train.

Included in the price:

  • 7 nights bed, breakfast, lunch and evening meal. Laundry - one load per week.
  • 10 or 15 hours of English teaching - 2-3 hours per day. Preparation for a variety of different English courses such as the CAE exams; Cambridge PET and KET; IELTS etc. However, for some examinations, increased teaching hours may be needed at an extra charge.
  • One full day and two half day’s cultural visits per week.
  • Plenty of towns and cities in which to visit.
  • If you want to visit London this can be included at an extra cost.
  • There is Wi-Fi connection, for which you can use the Internet and Skype.
  • We offer a good DVD library of over 300 DVD’s, from Walt Disney films, Startreck movies to documentaries. We also have "Netflix” which gives you 100’s of English and American recent films to watch, which will increase your English vocabulary.
  • If you enjoy reading. Our book library is also well stocked with novels, information books, History, Architecture, Mathematics, and English books for all levels.
  • Students are tested on day one, to ensure that they are being taught at the correct level.
  • At the end of the course you will get a progress report, which gives you information on your performance and how to continue your English studies. Also you will get a Rye School of English attendance certificate.
  • Our large study allows me to teach students in peace and quiet. I use a white board, various teaching textbooks; newspapers and magazines; also CD’s and games to encourage my students to learn and enjoy the lessons.

There is lots to do!

If you enjoy sports there is plenty to do. You could horse ride locally, play golf or squash at Hawkhurst, (15 minutes away). At Bewl Water Outdoor Centre in Royal Tunbridge Wells you can sail, canoe, rock climb, wind surf, and drive the powerboats. You can pay tennis in Rolvenden.

If you enjoy walking, there are some interesting walks through Slade Wood and in the countryside.

If you enjoy history. Battle Abbey is 30 minutes away and here you can walk round the actual place where the famous Battle of Hastings (1066) took place between the Anglo Saxon King and the Norman King William the Conqueror. Or, you can visit Bodiam Castle one of best-preserved 14th century moated castles in Britain.

If you enjoy swimming in the sea, you will be pleased to know, that we are only 30 minutes from the famous Camber Sands, which has 12 miles of golden sandy beaches. Or, if you prefer swimming in fresh water you can do this at the local Tenterden swimming baths, which has a wave machine.
